Sweet Little Zoe
We have all known this day was coming for some time now. We just didn't want to think about it much less deal with it. Today Zoe, Betsy's little Miniature Schnauzer, went to Doggie Heaven. When Betsy moved to Tyler last summer she wasn't able to keep Zoe because she could not find a place to rent which accepted pets. Zoe came to Nederland to stay with us for what Betsy hoped would only be a year. Zoe had only been with us a few weeks when we took her to the Vet and discovered she was a diabetic. Her blood sugar was constantly over 500 most of the summer and early fall. I jokingly told by friends I retired to stay home and become Zoe's caregiver. After several months Dr. Webb finally got her blood sugar under control and she lost a good bit of weight. She was full of energy and enjoyed playing with our Schnauzer, Ozzy. Early in January Dr. Webb noticed she had cataracts but thought since they were just beginning it would be a while before she really lost any of her vision. But within a few weeks Zoe had lost all of her vision in one eye. Her good eye began deteriorating very rapidly. It was so sad watching her struggle. She fell into our in-ground swimming pool twice. Luckily we were home and rescued her. Things just kept getting worse. Betsy knew what needed to be done, but ask if we could hold off until she came home during her Spring Break. So Betsy came and loved her sweet little girl for a few days, let her sleep in the bed with her and even treated her to Dairy Queen ice cream. The appointment had been made for 4:30. All three of us were trying not to think or talk about what was about to happen. Then Rick and Betsy took her and I stayed home and prayed and picked up her food and water dishes, her bed and some of her toys hoping it would ease the pain for Betsy on her return home. It didn't take long and my baby daughter returned with her dad. Red eyes all around. I will always remember this sweet little dog who was a true companion to Betsy for eight years. I do think God has a special place for animals and I know our Zoe is happy there. Please pray for Betsy. She is going home Saturday and she will most likely cry most of the way.
